Ryan Elected, With Strong Plurality: Richard M. Ryan, 31, won a sweeping victory in the Dec. 13 special election for selectman, winning with a 566-vote plurality over his nearest opponent, William F. Nicholson, and a majority of 224 over the total votes received by all three of his opponents. Ryan supporters were exuberant in the Memorial School auditorium as Town Clerk John Francis Darcy read the results at 10:30 p.m. Ryan received 1,643 votes; Nicholson, 1,077; Gillis, 264; and Mrs. Mitchell, 78. There were 18 blanks – for a new record special election total vote of 3,081. About 100 were present for the results, most of them Ryan supporters, including many young people wearing Ryan straw hats.
Board to Amend Bylaw: The Hull Personnel Board, having completed its review of the classification and job functions in Bylaw XX, has initiated a new scope of activity. This will consist of alterations to the bylaw, based on analysis of the information obtained in its review. It is the board’s intention to distribute a complete copy of Bylaw XX and its recommendations. This will be done approximately four weeks in advance of the annual town meeting so that voters can have sufficient time to properly evaluate any changes.
Highway Workers Seek Pay Boost: Hull highway employees last night asked selectmen to insert an article in the March town meeting warrant calling for a job law amendment whereby current pay scales for all “W” grades would be hiked 8 percent, retroactive to Jan. 1, 1972.
Engineers Named to Post: George H. Bradford Jr. was appointed to the permanent Planning and Building Committee and Saul Cooper to the Sewer Commission in actions by the appointing authorities last night. Both are registered engineers. Cooper was unanimously named by the Board of Health, with Edward Gilman as alternate in the event of a recusal by Mr. Cooper.
Late Wire May Prompt Claim: As the result of late delivery of a telegram containing what proved to be the low bid on a Hull redevelopment bond issue, Hull Redevelopment Authority Chairman Charles E. Gould said yesterday that a claim against Western Union Co. for recovery of the difference in interest between the lowest and next lowest bidders may result.
Ecology Poster Contest Begins: The Hull Ecology Action League recently announced the second annual Ecology Poster Contest. The contest is open to all students in Hull Public Schools, and prizes will be awarded in each of the Damon, Jacobs, Memorial, and high schools. HEAL members will serve as judges, along with the principal and faculty members from each school. The theme for the contest is “Our Environment.”
Youngsters to Join Carolers: In a move hailed as the “beginning of dream,” children from Hull Village and Point Allerton will join voices for the first time to sing Christmas carols this season for the townspeople of Hull. The combined carolers, expected to number more than 125 children, will sing the evening of Dec. 26 at Monument Square in the center of town and at the home for the elderly. The children will also sing house-to-house in their respective neighborhoods the evening of Dec. 23 before joining for community caroling.
Chanukah Lights to Glow: On Monday evening, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m., Hull Hadassah will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Boyer Auditorium in Temple Beth Sholom. In honor of the holiday, there will be a Chanukah candle-lighting ceremony by the Hull Hashachar-Young Judean group. Mrs. Bernard Forman, program chairwoman, will present Mrs. McClosky, a former airline stewardess, who will speak about preparation for travel, plain and fancy. Special Chanukah refreshments will be served.
Times Introduces New Column: By next week at this time, you will be reading the Hull Youth Center News, a special column to appear in this newspaper each week. This column will contain all the news of progress and events coming out of the new youth center and will also serve as a forum for articles written by young people. Currently, each grade is represented by three young people on a Youth Advisory Council. Their names, plus details of their first meeting, will be announced next week.
Belated Birthday Greetings … to Amy Mitchell Johns, who was 75 on Dec. 9. She is the mother of Marguerite Johns, a popular clerk at the Hull Electric Light Department.
