Power Rates to Rise on Dec. 31: Hull Electric Light Department power rates will be increased an average of 26 percent, retroactive to Nov. 14, 1971, when Phase 2 of the National Wage and Price Controls began. Municipal Light Department manager Everett Lutzy said today that the hike will be reflected on bills since Dec. 31. The rate increases are made necessary by a 30 percent increase in the cost of power supplied to Hull by the New England Power Co.
Engineers Map Renewal Plans: The Hull Redevelopment Authority met Tuesday evening with Pavlo Engineering Co. engineers and with John Brown, project planner, as updated technical specifics of Renewal Project 1 were presented. HRA Chairman Charles E. Gould presided as Marvin Miller and Jerry Early, of Pavlo, spoke about project execution plans, which call for the action to start in the vicinity of Monument Square with clearance and land development. A new rotary traffic circle will surround the War Memorial and a new alternate road to Nantasket Avenue will run southeast toward Washington Boulevard. High-rise apartments are planned on the oceanfront, with a marina and motels on the Bay Front off May Street, also known as “Clam Alley.”
Youth Advisory Council Convenes: Wednesday, Dec. 15, marked the first meeting of the 21-member Youth Advisory Council. These young people, from grades six through 12, met at the site of the temporary youth center, The Quincy House, and effectively drew up the format and immediate program for the soon-to-be opened youth center. Some of the many topics covered included membership qualifications for young people to be involved in the center and the rules and policies that will govern it.
Fire Cause Probed: Acting Fire Chief Kervyn Means and the state’s fire marshal are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted a three-story unoccupied apartment house at Nantasket Avenue in the Kenberma business section early Sunday morning. Hingham and Cohasset departments filled in at local stations as Hull firefighters battled the windswept flames in frigid temperatures and controlled the fire within an hour, although the recall was not rung until 6:20 a.m. Hull Red Cross workers gave firemen hot coffee and sandwiches, supplied by John Calvi and Lenny Fair.
Injured Internationals Brought Ashore: Two Pakistanis, an Indian and a Fin, members of the crew of a British oil tanker, were brought ashore with injuries by the Hull Coast Guard on Saturday. Twenty-six more Pakistanis, 11 Indians, two Fins, 18 British, and an Australian stayed aboard the tanker Garonne, loaded with 37,000 tons of oil bound for White Fuel Co. The Indian crewman, Knarrayan Poojary, 21, of Bombay, said that he had a pain in his right abdomen, while Ismail, 21, and Mohd Siddiqi, 20, both of Karachi, West Pakistan, had been hurt in falls from the bridge to the deck. Kari Juvakka, 27, of Lappeeranta, Finland, had an injured left eye.
Surplus Food for the Needy: Surplus food for certified low-income families of Hull will be distributed on Wednesday, Dec. 29. Distribution will be from the Guard Room at the rear of the Green Hill Fire Station on Atlantic Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. only. No food will be available after distribution hours.
Jolly St. Nick Parties: More than 100 children joyously climbed all over Santa Claus at Christmas parties given Sunday by the Hull Council K of C at the Council Home and by the Villagers Association at Hull Village. The jolly old fellow was quite flustered, as he smoothed his beard on several occasions, but kept chuckling and “ho-ho-ing” nevertheless.
Football Captain Turnover: One hundred pizzas and two captains made for an enjoyable evening at the V.F.W. Post in Hull. It was at this food fest that the football captains for next year were named. Retiring captains George Manchester, Pete Nugent, and Mike Mulford were pleased with this year’s selections. John Miller and Kevin McNamara will captain the team next year. Both boys never missed a game or came late or missed practice. Jack was a point getter on the track team, in the pole-vaulting event. Kevin is on the hockey team and is a fine defenseman.
Home for the Holidays: Eric Schiller will be on leave from the Maritime Academy on Long Island, N.Y., and is expected home later in the week as is Michael Mahoney from the Maine Maritime Academy. Both are graduates of Hull High School.
