The Hull-Cohasset co-op boys’ varsity hockey team has put up a few impressive wins to start off the season. The most recent triumph came on Wednesday night with a key 3-1 win at home over Abington. Finn Carragher broke a 1-1 tie in the third period off an assist from Matt Mahoney; then Luke Dunham iced the game with an empty net goal. Dunham also scored in the second period, with assists going to Carragher and Luke Richardson. After a tough 3-2 loss to Boston Latin Academy to open the season, H-C rattled off three consecutive lopsided wins, before a late loss and a tie brought their record to 4-2-1.
The three-game win streak started with a 7-1 home win over Middleborough on Dec. 18. H-C followed that effort with a solid 8-1 verdict over Tri-County Regional VoTech on Dec. 22 in Franklin. Hull contributors to the cause were: Sam McDonnell with two goals and an assist; Luke Dunham with a goal and two assists; Matt Mahoney with a goal and two assists; Rob Cassagrande with a goal and an assist; and Hayden Manfredi with a goal. The team made it three wins in a row with a 6-1 triumph over Blue Hills Regional VoTech in Canton last week. Mahoney led the way with a hat trick and an assist. Luke Richardson added a goal. Finn Carragher had a goal and an assist, and Cassagrande added two assists.
Last Wednesday, H-C led host Pembroke 2-0 entering the third period, but two power play goals tied the game before Pembroke netted the game winner in the final two minutes. H-C outshot the Titans 45-23. H-C followed with 2-2 tie at host St. John Paul II, scoring in the final minute to earn the tie.
Entering Wednesday’s game versus Abington, Cassagrande leads all Hull players with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. He is followed by Mahoney (4-6-10); Dunham (2-4-6); Manfredi (2-2-4); Carragher (1-3-4); McDonnell (2-1-3); and Richardson (2-1-3).
Girls’ basketball nets first win
The Hull High School girls’ varsity basketball team broke into the win column with a 53-22 win at home on Monday over Norfolk Aggie. Kristina Orpen led the effort with 20 points, and Nina Tiani had 12 points and six assists. Haylee Londergan added nine points and six rebounds, and Lucy Peters and Emily Punchard each chipped in with six points. Hull (1-3) lost to host Norwell on Tuesday 64-33. Orpen was top gun again with 22 points. Hull will visit Rockland on Friday evening.
Boys’ basketball on hold
The Pirates boys’ basketball team has been sidelined for the past two weeks. The team’s game at Avon on Dec. 29 was cancelled, and the contest this week against Norwell was postponed. Hull (2-2) will host Rockland on Friday night.
