HDTC Co-Chair Celia Nolan compared Zelenskyy’s actions to George Washington’s selfless decision when American democracy hung on the leader’s choice – Washington’s greatest achievement is that he left office, while Volodymyr Zelensky’s greatest achievement is that he stayed.
In stepping down, Washington set the standard for all future U.S. presidents. In standing fast when his country was under fire from Russia, Zelenskyy set the standard for all political leaders from around the world.
The committee said his bravery and his common touch have inspired not only the people of Ukraine, but most of the rest of the world as well. In the enduring conflict between democracy and autocracy, Zelenskyy’s courage has unified and reinvigorated the Western democracies to a degree not seen since 9/11.
If the democratic world is newly emboldened, much of the credit belongs to Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, and the HDTC is proud to call him a true Champion of Democracy.
The committee, the local grassroots organization of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, will send a full delegation to the state convention in June, with alternates. The delegation was chosen by caucus, from candidates stepping forward to be a voice for Hull. That commitment to participating directly in our government, which is a right that current events prove is not to be taken for granted, was conducted under the American flag, the committee’s banner, and a Ukrainian flag made by Co-Chair Doug Henry.
“We stand with Ukraine,” said Henry.
