The college teams have already kicked off the season. Sunday plans are now being made around the start of the NFL season and the start of the Mac Jones era in Foxborough. And here in town, the Pirates set sail on a much-anticipated season on Friday night.
Hull will welcome Blue Hills Regional VoTech to the Gut to kick off the 2021 season (Hull High School, 6 p.m.). Coach Mike O’Donnell has faced the Warriors three times in his previous four years at Hull. The Pirates won 21-6 in Canton in 2017 and also at home 21-8 in 2018. The Warriors dominated the game 32-6 in 2019.
Soccer teams stumble
The boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams will be quick to put their season openers in the rear-view mirror. Taking on highly skilled teams that play in higher divisions, each team dropped a 5-0 result to start the season.
The girls’ team fell at home to Marshfield on Wednesday night. “I was pleased with our effort. I thought we played wsoell together, and we were in the game 60 minutes being down only 1-0,” says head coach Stew Bell. “Our back four on defense, junior captain Bridget Fleming, senior captain Mattie Tuchmann, junior Ally Truglia, and freshman Elsie Harper played well as a unit.” Goalkeeper Amelia Donovan had several key saves in the first half to keep it a close contest.
The boys’ team could not keep pace on the road at Scituate on Tuesday against a talented Sailors squad. Despite allowing five goals, junior goalkeeper Sasha Green made 12 saves in the first half in his varsity debut. Coach McCall was also encouraged by the efforts of stopper senior captain Richie Chau, junior captain midfielder Jack Burke, and junior defender Ryan Maher.
