Light Dept. Seeks Cable TV Permit: The Hull Municipal Light Dept. last night asked selectmen to issue an application to license to the department for installation and operation of a CATV or cable TV system in Hull. Licensing of the MLD is permissible under state law governing cable TV operation by either public or private companies. Municipal Light Commissioner Thayer Baldwin said that, under the CATV system, income would revert to the town in the form of a fee charged to users and that payment in lieu of taxes to the town would also increase. Other possible benefits listed by MLD Manager Everett Lutzy in a letter to selectmen were: electric power rates reduction to consumers; greater plant efficiency by automatic meter reading and billing; and constant guard of the total electric system to detect weak points and take corrective action to reduce or eliminate power shutoffs.
Fin Com Planning for March 6: Onward, ever onward toward March marches the Hull Finance Commission, plowing through budget requests and interviewing department heads as the warrant posting deadline of Feb. 14 exerts mounting pressure. Before the warrant is posted, the commission has to round up all panel reports from members, make a final in-depth study of all funding requests and make a recommendation on every article in the warrant for the March 6 annual town meeting.
Chief Blasts Hitchiking: Chief Shannon is highly critical of the practice of hitchhiking, as applicable to the town of Hull, and feels strongly that it should be discouraged by all in authority for the problems it manifests. It is a violation of the law, and it is an open invitation to robbery, sexual assault, and murder. To a lesser degree, it demeans the dignity of the young ladies who repeatedly solicit rides, and it presents motorist-pedestrian traffic accident hazards of major proportions.
Students Prep for TV Appearance: On Jan. 13, four seventh-grade students from the Memorial Middle School will go to WBZ-TV in Boston to tape a show, “For Kids Only,” which will appear on Channel 4 on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 9 a.m. Andrea Baron, Mark Carroll, Kathy Loiacono, and James Vafides have prepared questions that they will ask the two guests on that show: Mrs. Francis Sargent, wife of the governor, and Mrs. Tommy Heinsohn, of the Boston Celtics.
Penny Sale for Youth Hockey: Hull residents wishing to help parents defray the heavy expenses of the Youth Hockey program in town can do so by attending and supporting a Penny Sale to be held at Worrick Inn on Monday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m. Many fine prizes have been donated by the parents, according to Mrs. Marjorie McNamara, chairlady, and more are welcome.
R.N., Firefighter Coach Girl Scouts: Troop No. 310, Junior Girl Scouts, under the leadership of Mrs. Florence Adams, spent a busy fall and holiday season. Mrs. Carol Doyle, a registered nurse, provided a productive instructional meeting on first aid and simple bandaging to complete several health badge requirements. Another meeting was spent with Mr. Ronald Lichtenberger, of the Hull Fire Department, giving a talk and demonstration of fire safety in the home and elsewhere.
Coast Guard Blood Program: On Jan. 26, at 9 a.m., the Point Allerton Coast Guard Station and the Hull Red Cross will conduct a Blood Donor Program at the Point Allerton Coast Guard Station. The program will be open to the public; donor information and scheduling can be obtained by calling Mr. Rogers at 925-0165. The current blood supply is at an extremely low level, and donors are needed to increase the supply.
Congrats to Local Gymnast: Steve LaBreck placed third in two events, still rings and parallel bars, in the gymnastic meet between Brookline and Quincy held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Quincy Vocational High School. This activity was under the supervision of Coach Pete Gallagher, also of Hull. Steve is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. LaBreck, of 46 Brookline Ave., and is a member of the class of 1973 at Hull High School.
