To the Editor:
At one time, not long ago, there was a post box at Allerton Station that was convenient for drive up.
The box was vandalized and replaced. Although the position of a non-drive-up box is still in a drive-up position, Colin McDonough supervisor of customer service for the postal service, has agreed with field maintenance that a “snorkel” box (one in which the slot is more easily accessible to vehicles) is not necessary, or that area is not eligible for a “snorkel” box.
I have seen many elders parking their sedan close to the box, struggling out and walking to put mail in the snorkel-less box. I have seen other, higher vehicles rub their tires on cement to get close enough to this drive-up box position that avails a post box, but not a drive-up box.
Maybe community members will like to advocate for themselves by contacting the man in charge. Here is his information: Colin McDonough, SCS (Supervisor
Of Customer Service), Hingham Post Office, 121 North St., Hingham, MA 02043,
781-749-0610, or uspscustomersupport@usps.gov.
Thank you,
